5 Pet-Friendly Design Updates for Your Home

Do you have a four-legged best friend that you love? You’re not alone. It's estimated that 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats are owned in the United States. And 81 percent of respondents in a National Association of Realtors (NAR) survey said they’d take their pets’ needs into account in choosing their next living situation. So it makes sense that making space for your pet or pets in your home is important. And if you’re selling your home, pet-friendly amenities could help attract potential homebuyers who are also pet parents. Here are 5 pet-friendly design updates for your home to consider adding.

1. Pet washing station: Fences, dog doors and laminate flooring are the most common pet-friendly improvements Americans make to homes, shares the NAR. But some are even going so far as to modify their floor plans to add pet-washing station in the laundry room to make bath time just that much more comfortable for Fido.

2. Built-in Food Storage: Food storage cupboards and built-in storage space for supplies and equipment to the kitchen are becoming a hot new craze. Think food-storage cabinets similar to trash-can pull-outs.

3. Custom Feeding Stations: Tired of constantly knocking over your pets food or water bowl? Some homeowners have a special feeding spot with a built-in feeding station located in the Arizona room, under the stairs or in the laundry room made especially for their favorite fur ball.

4. Special Potty Areas: More and more homeowners are adding outdoor potty areas just off the pet door “planted” with antimicrobial artificial grass for easier clean up and comfort.

5. Built-in Pet Cubby: In the same vein as the built-in feeding station, some homeowners create aesthetically pleasing built-in pet-bed cubbies. Bye-bye boring old pet bed, hello custom pet cubby in the den!
