Safety tips for ringing in the New Year

Safety tips for ringing in the New Year

Did you know that New Year’s Eve is also one of the most dangerous holidays of the year? It is estimated that during Christmas and New Year's season alone, almost 95 million Americans will be on the road traveling to visit family and friends. People are much more likely to drink and drive around Jan. 1 than during any other major holiday of the year. And more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday, statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed. Please share and remember these safety tips for ringing in the New Year.

  • Travel in packs/pairs: If you’re going out for New Year’s Eve, don’t go out alone. Travel in packs or pairs. Especially if you’re going to a party or a place you’ve never been.
  • Pace yourself: A majority of people will be drinking on New Year's Eve, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to pay attention to how much you and others are consuming. Balance your alcohol intake with water and snacks.
  • Watch your drink: While New Year’s Eve is super fun it’s also super dangerous when it comes to someone spiking your drink while it’s unattended. Keep your drink with you at all times. Even if you have to go to the bathroom, either take it with your or give it to a close friend of yours.
  • Careful of the cork: When you’re popping champagne bottles, aim the cork away from people. This may sound funny, however; it’s a serious issue, it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye!
  • Don’t drink and drive: Whatever you do this New Year’s Eve, don’t drink and drive! Even if you’ve had only a couple of drinks, have a designated driver to drive you around; whether it’s a sober friend, a taxi, or Uber.

It’s hard to believe that another year has nearly come and gone. Everyone wants to have an unforgettable New Year’s Eve, and if you remember these safety tips for ringing in the New Year, you can keep it that way. Cheers to a safe and successful New Year. Happy New Year! – Lisa

Home sales still in demand for the holidays

by Lisa Bray

Home sales still in demand for the holidays

Home sales are still in demand for the holidays according to the most recent RE/MAX National Housing Report for the season. October home sales decreased 7.7 percent below sales in September, and 0.8 percent lower than October 2014. Based on the report’s MLS data from fifty-three metropolitan areas, the Median Sales Price for homes sold in October was $205,000, which is 6.5 percent above the price one year ago.

The inventory of homes for sale still challenges this market at a level 13.1 percent less than October 2014. At the rate of home sales in October, the Month’s Supply of inventory was 4.5, nearly the same as the 4.7 average last October. For the last eight years, the average seasonal drop in sales from September to October has been 3.4 percent. In October, twenty of the fifty-three metro areas surveyed reported higher sales on a year-over-year basis, with seven experiencing double-digit increases.

“We’ve seen a very strong demand for homes in 2015 despite the continuing challenges of low inventory. Demand is mostly due to the slowly improving economy and a more favorable employment situation. October’s moderation of price increases is typical this time of year and actually offers home buyers a little better affordability.” Dave Liniger, RE/MAX CEO, Chairman of the Board and Co-Founder
