Flooding in Goodyear Forces Residents to Use Extreme Caution

by Lisa Bray

Flooding in Goodyear Forces Residents to Use Extreme Caution

The monsoon storms have impacted Arizona hard this year. In fact, on Monday Governor Jan Brewer issued a statewide emergency to be in place for areas affected by the heavy rainfall and flooding. The governor's declaration set Arizona's emergency response and recovery plan in motion. That plan allows for coordination with federal, tribal and local agencies in addressing the immediate flooding-related problems, as well as working on recovery and longer-term clean-up efforts.

The West Valley was heavily affected by the storms and the flooding in Goodyear has forced residents to use extreme caution. School closures and stranded motorists were just a few of the inconveniences caused by the storm in the Goodyear, Avondale, Surprise, and Glendale areas. If you’ve experienced flooding in your neighborhood or place of business there are thankfully places to get sandbags provided you bring your own shovel. According to AZcentral, sandbags can be picked up at the Goodyear Community Park near Avalon Drive and Litchfield Road and the Goodyear Dog Park located south of Maricopa 85 on Estrella Parkway. Residents in Avondale can also pick up sandbags that they fill themselves at public works by calling 623-333-4700. Tolleson residents can pick up sand bags at 9700 W. Jefferson Street in Tolleson.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to educate themselves and stay aware of impending storms and road closures in their area to keep themselves safe. Even if you feel you live in a community with a low risk of flooding, remember that anywhere it rains, it can flood.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future. For future storms and flooding preparation Ready.gov recommends having flood insurance, building an emergency kit, establishing a family escape plan, and avoid driving or walking in heavily flooded areas.
