The West Valley

The West Valley

On the banks of the Aqua Fria River in the west valley lie the communities known as Avondale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park. Each of these Phoenix Metro area cities offer a unique quality of life for homeowners and those who plan to be homeowners.

The west valley was highly sought after for the open farmlands and the clean water than ran in the river. The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company has been largely responsible for the development of the west valley, as the farmlands were perfect to grow cotton for tires. Litchfield Park was founded by Paul Weeks Litchfield, who was an executive for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He purchased 36,000 acres of land to cultivate cotton, which later became the community of Litchfield Park in 1926.

Today, Goodyear has been named the third fastest growing place among the cities and towns in Arizona between 1990 and 2000. Goodyear is home to the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds who come to Arizona for spring training each year. In 2011, Avondale was named one of the top ten digital cities in America for their efficient use of technology.

Entertainment, Shopping

In the west valley, there are plenty of options for entertainment and shopping, with a growing list of top choices for dining out. In the heart of Litchfield Park is the Wigwam Resort, which was first opened to the public in 1929. Today, the Wigwam Resort hosts a variety of events from weddings to charity events and plenty of golf.

A short drive east on the 101 Loop, is the local hot spot, Westgate City Center where you can watch a movie, hockey or football games and hear your favorite bands. If fast cars are more your speed, you should know that Avondale is home to the Phoenix International Raceway and the unique auto mall that hosts dozens of auto dealerships all located in one convenient exit off the 101 Loop.

Outdoor Recreation, Parks, Community Services

The west valley offers plenty of outdoor recreation, public parks and community services such as the Avondale Community Center and Civic Center or the Sam Garcia Western Avenue Library.

Throughout the communities of Avondale, Goodyear and Litchfield Park are dozens of public parks maintained by the cities. Among the most popular is Friendship Park, a 55-acre space with soccer and baseball fields, tennis courts, play grounds, covered ramadas, a dog park and the charming Japanese Garden, a tribute to Avondale’s sister city, Kaizu, Japan.

For those who enjoy the trails, Estrella Mountain Regional Park is definitely a place you want to check out. With nearly 20,000 acres, Estrella Mountain Regional Park is the second largest park in the Maricopa County park system.

The city of Goodyear offers a variety of activities from little league, enrichment classes and a Special Olympics program. Throughout the west valley, you can enjoy annual events that range from holiday celebrations, golf tournaments, art festivals and so much more. The west valley has something to offer all walks of life.

Avondale and Goodyear provide education through the school districts of Avondale, Liberty, Litchfield and Mobile. Additional, there are two high school districts, Agua Fria Union and Buckeye Union. Litchfield Park provides education through the Litchfield School District.

Estrella Mountain Community College, located in the west valley, offers in-class studies as well as online education course. Located in Avondale is the Universal Technical Institute, which is the country’s premier and accredited program for mechanic training. In 2008 Franklin Pierce University opened in Goodyear, which is a private post-secondary school that offers undergraduate and graduate programs.
